WHEELS is a collaborative effort of Phoenix Frontier, Inc. and Rivershore, Inc., a non profit agency providing quality care and services to people with disabilities since 1980. Rivershore's goal, in sync with Phoenix Frontier, Inc., is to achieve excellence and to empower persons with developmental disabilities to live as independently as possible and to allow each person to grow to the fullest human potential. OUR SERVICES are based on the premise that people learn the most when they are doing things they like to do. Program participants choose their activities in WHEELS based on their interests. Therefore, the volunteer opportunities and other activities correspond to the interests of the individual. If a person has a desire to do a certain activity, every attempt will be made to develop opportunities in that area of interest. They will also be encouraged to try different activities in order to make choices based on their own experiences. Throughout these activities life skills are taught: social skills, basic education, including arithmetic and reading, problem solving, and money management. WHEELS SERVICES are available Monday through Friday in Niagara County in collaboration with Rivershore, Inc. Individuals are picked up between 8:00 and 9:00 AM and are returned home from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. Monthly activity schedules are provided in advance so that people will know if money is needed for activities or lunch. Most days participants will be asked to bring a lunch. Activities include, but are not limited to: weekly volunteer opportunities, dining out, shopping, working with computers, exercise and fitness, swimming, bowling, basic education skills, arts and crafts, picnics, cooking, daily activities and tours of businesses and museums. ELIGIBILITY Approved participants must be OMRDD (Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities) Medicaid eligible and eligible for waiver services.
